Unwanted Gifts is a series of several hundred small cards; each contains an image and a small amount of text. The images and text were found using Ebay.com, using search phrases designed to find auction items that had at one point been gifts (i.e. “was a gift” or “were a wedding present”). In their original context, both the image and text are purely utilitarian, but are reinterpreted to highlight subtexts and micro-narratives. The descriptions inadvertently reveal intimate personal stories and allude to a larger story of which the view can only catch a glimpse but is able to continue to construct. The everyday objects become a vehicle of implied memory, mass produced objects become characterized by their individual trajectories. And yet, the fact that these items are now for sale replaces personal associations with calculative economics. The business card format references instances of personal exchange and the commodification of those interactions.
